Modem stops redialling ISP after a few attempts

My ISP's number is often engaged, but although I have configured the dialup settings to keep retrying, the modem stops dialling after 10 or so attempts and generates an error. The only way I have found to cure this is to shut down the PC and restart it. How can I solve this problem?

It sounds as if your modem has a 'blacklist' function that prevents it from repeatedly dialling the same number. This is a requirement for approval for use on the telephone networks of some countries. To clear the blacklist you must either turn the power off and on, (which if you have an internal modem means shutting down and restarting), or wait an hour or so for the blacklist to expire.

You can disable the blacklist by issuing some extra AT commands before dialling. If the modem has a Rockwell chipset the extra command is %TCB. For a US Robotics or 3Com modem, try S40=2 or S40=7. Add this in the Extra settings field of the Advanced Connection Settings dialog box, accessed by clicking the Advanced button on the Connection tab of the modem's properties. Depending on the modem, you may need to put AT in front of the command.
